The mission of the ILSI Health and Environmental Sciences Institute (HESI) is to stimulate and support scientific research and educational programs that contribute to the identification and resolution of health and environmental issues of concern to the public, scientific community, government agencies, and industry. Acknowledging a need for HESI “brand identification,” the HESI Board of Trustees sought the development of an appropriate and clearly identifiable logo for the organization. The new logo went through several design stages during 2004, and was adopted by the Board at the Annual Meeting in January, 2005.
The components of the new logo were crafted with careful consideration of HESI’s structure and goals. HESI is global in nature, with members from the United States, Japan, and throughout Europe. Hence, the depiction of the globe. Science is central to every HESI activity – so “SCIENCE” appears at the center of the logo. Each HESI activity is carried forward by scientists representing industry, government, and academia – the HESI “tripartite” approach. Each of these separate and distinct scientific sectors has “a seat at the HESI table,” and is represented by its own triangle. The three triangles, in turn, form a larger triangle – not overlapping, but working synergistically to reach consensus. The industrial third of the triangle appears at the base, representing the fiscal commitment to HESI made by its member companies.
